Ashley's Adventures at the Genius Bar - A Tech Rant

I'm a bit of a Tech Nerd.

I can't help it.  I work in IT.

The plus side is that typically there's not much I can't fix when it comes to my own computer and phone.

At least that was true before I got an iPhone.

Don't get me wrong.  I like my iPhone 5.  I don't LOVE it though.

There's restrictions and limitations built into the Operating System, that as a user,  I don't appreciate.  I mean can't you and Google just GET ALONG?!?!?!

I also don't like that I can't do any repairs myself.

Back in the days with my old BlackBerry.  If I was having decreased battery life, I could pop down to the store, buy a new battery and install it myself.  With my iPhone?  Not so much.

So when I started having sever WiFi connectivity issues, I had a bit of a panic.

Thankfully, my phone was still under the 1 Year Limited Manufacturers Warranty.

Amiright?
Considering I had never dropped it, gotten it wet of abused it more than shoving it in my purse without a case, I was hoping that something like signal strength would fall under said warranty.

And it did.  Thankfully.

Because if it didn't.  I would have had a very expensive paperweight that pretty much only worked as a telephone.  And at 11 months old.  That would have sucked.  Like seriously sucked.

How as consumers, have we reached the point where we accept products, (and expensive one's at that) that have such a limited lifespan.

I mean I'm locked into a 3 year contract.  If I had to replace my phone at 11 months because of a hardware flaw, I would have had to pay out somewhere in the neighbourhood of $400 to replace it.

How is that ok?  My first few cell phones had no problem lasting the length of my 3 year contract.  Except for the time that I lost my phone at a Christmas Party, I have NEVER had to pay to upgrade.  Hell, my old Nokia couldn't be killed!  Trust me.  I tried!

But nowadays, if you get 2 years out of a phone, that's normal.

A laptop will probably last you 3-4 years.  A PC you can push but that's presuming you can do you own troubleshooting and maintenance.

How is it that technology is getting better and better every day, prices are still going up and yet quality has decreased significantly?

And why are we ok with it?

Cheers,

Ash

p.s. on a side note.  I was worried about my appointment at the Genius Bar.  I was afraid that they wouldn't fix or replace the phone, that with my luck, my phone wouldn't display the same symptoms when in the hands of a professional.  Thankfully, the WiFi was going up and down while the guy was running diagnostics and their signal strength in store rivals NASA.  So my baby was replaced and seems to be alright.  YAY!

Fluffy Thing Friday - Quit Monkeying Around

Today has been insane at work.  Usually I have these posts done in the morning with my coffee while I'm going through my email.

Today, not so much.  I basically hit the ground running and haven't sat down since.

But I REALLY REALLY wanted to get these cute little guys up so here we go.

I don't care if technically they're Gorillas, Orangutans or Japanese Macaques chillin' in a hot spring.

They're all adorable.

OMG this is totally what my hair looks like when I take it out of hot rollers.

Cheers,

Ash

The 3 Stages of Putting a Halloween Costume on your Pet

Ok so last night I officially became one of THOSE pet owners.

The type that dresses their pet up for Halloween.

I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.  I was at Petsmart and the costumes were on sale, and I just knew the whole experience would be hilarious.

What I learned is that there are very distinct stages your pet goes through when you put a costume on them.

Stage 1: OMG WTF IS GOING ON

Stage 1 involves shock and confusion.  For a solid minute Jasper just sat there with the most dumbfounded look on his face.  He doesn't wear a collar because he's an indoor only cat so he was confused to have anything on him.

Stage 2: GET IT OFF!!!

Once the shock wore off, he ran around like a psycho pawing at the costume and generally spazzing out.

Stage 3: WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME!!!

Once your pet realizes that they can't get the costume off on their own, depression sits in and they stare at you looking all forlorn and mopey.  Like you're the worst mom in the world and because you're generally howling with laughter at this point, you are evil and enjoying their mental anguish.

All in all, it was an AWESOME experience for me.  For Jasper? Not so much.

I'm so mean.

Cheers,

Ash

Fluffy Thing Fridays - Hippos!!!!

Happy Friday Everyone.

For us up here in Canada, it's been a short week because we had our Thanksgiving on Monday.  Anyone who works in the Corporate world knows that a short week doesn't mean less work.  Just less time to do it in.

Now.  On to cuter things.

Hippos.  Hippos are pretty bad ass.

Did you know that Hippos kill more people each year than Lions, Elephants and Rhino's combined?

Awww. Aren't you a cute little bad ass. Yes you are.

Hippo's are also tough enough that typically Lion's won't mess with them.

Aww look at the little dude eating some salad.

Nose boop!

Yeah would you mess with that baby if that mom was watching over it?  Hell no.

Personally this was always my favorite sequence in Fantasia.

Cheers,

Ash

Long, Short, Curly, Straight. What to do with my Hair.

I've never been one of those people that loves their hair.

I mean I don't hate it, but like many curly haired girls out there, I'm constantly frustrated by it.

Naturally I have medium brown, thick, curly/wavy hair.

Since I was 16 I have had short hair, long hair, straight hair, blonde hair, black hair, red hair, various shades of brown hair and multiple combinations of high-lighted/low-lighted hair.

Hair was always one of those things that I could, and did, easily change depending on my mood.

Since I started noticing grey hairs around the age of 26, I've pretty much stuck to a darker brown than my natural with some highlights underneath.  It works because I don't have any roots and it looks natural.

At the beginning of the summer I chopped my hair to above my shoulders.  It's the first time since I was a teenager that I've had what could be considered "short" hair.  The 3 years prior to that my hair was mid to low back.  If you consider that according to my hairdresser I have enough hair for 3 people, that's a lot of bloody hair.  And during the hot and humid summer months, it's a bitch to deal with.  Because as my curly girls know, humidity + curls = frizz.  And I've never had CURLY hair.  My hair is more curl/wave/frizz.

So in the spring I decided that I wasn't going to put up with that shit and chopped 11 inches off.  Then in July I went a little shorter.  And I have to say, I enjoyed the change.

But recently I've been missing my long hair desperately.  I miss being able to put it in a long braid.  I miss being able to do anything with it in general.  Because right now I have 2 options.  Up or down.  Curl or straight.  I'm also itching to do something with the color.

I get this itch every once in a while.  I mean it was that itch that prompted me to chop off 11 inches of hair. It's also the itch that in the past has lead me down the road to getting tattoos or piercings.

I don't know what causes it but something will dig into my brain and once it's there, I can't get it out.

I need to do SOMETHING.  And based on past experiences if I ignore the urge to change my look I will probably end up doing something more drastic that I should because the itch will turn into full on mental hives.

The great this is that I have an awesome stylist that I trust to have a bit of creative license with my hair.

Does anyone else get the random idea to do something drastic to their look?  I mean wouldn't it be cool to go out and buy new clothes, chop off your hair and color it a totally different shade and look like a totally different person tomorrow?

Am I the only one this happens to?

Cheers,

Ash

Fluffy Thing Fridays - A Dog and their Little Human

Anyone who has a pet can attest to the fact that sometimes a cat or dog will bond closer with one family member over another.  My cat Jasper loves my parents but it's my pillow he tries to sleep on and my head he tries to groom.

The sweetest instances of this, is when the family pet bonds particularly with their little human companions.

Ever seen a toddler smack the crap out of a big dog as their way of "petting" and had the dog just roll over and drool for some more?  There's no stronger bond than a dog and his little human.

No chair?  Let me help with that.

That dog is not going to MOVE for fear of waking that baby.

Yes, that is Pitbull that is holding a little girls hand.  I'm a firm believer that although some breeds can be more aggressive than others, that it's all about the environment they live in and their training.  That dog would probably rip someone's arm off it they attempted to touch that little girl.

Head boops while in the cone of shame?  I'm dying over here.

Yes, he's wearing a tutu.

Let me just be your step stool.

Cheers,

Ash

This dog is not happy that his little human is crying.
